Ebook About There are few creative acts more mysterious and magical than writing a song. But what if the goal wasn't so mysterious and was actually achievable for anyone who wants to experience more magic and creativity in their life? That's something that anyone will be inspired to do after reading Jeff Tweedy's How to Write One Song. Why one song? Because the difference between one song and many songs isn't a cute semantic trick—it's an important distinction that can simplify a notoriously confusing art form. The idea of becoming a capital-S songwriter can seem daunting, but approached as a focused, self-contained event, the mystery and fear subsides, and songwriting becomes an exciting pursuit. And then there is the energizing, nourishing creativity that can open up. How to Write One Song brings readers into the intimate process of writing one song—lyrics, music, and putting it all together—and accesses the deep sense of wonder that remains at the heart of this curious, yet incredibly fulfilling, artistic act. But it’s equally about the importance of making creativity part of your life every day, and of experiencing the hope, inspiration, and joy available to anyone who’s willing to get started.Book How to Write One Song Review :
I've always been curious about Tweedy as a songwriter. To me, his lyrics sometime seem pretty non-sequitur and nonsensical. I mean, most song lyrics (at least the stuff I'm most familiar with) fall somewhere on this spectrum, but his are particularly inscrutable. Reading this book, I definitely feel like I understand his process better, and it tracks in terms of his lyrical output.I've been taking guitar lessons for about a year and in the past couple months got to a point of rudimentary competence where I've written three and a half songs (so-called). And I've banked dozens more hummed-melodies and unused lyrics that I hope eventually to pair up into songs. I share Tweedy's attitude that you don't need to be precious about songwriting or just assume that because the finished product is not some work of genius, the process of making it was not worthwhile. His description of completely losing yourself while working on a song precisely describes the sensation I've experienced. It really is the *doing* and not the finished product that makes it so enjoyable. My songs so far are...not great. But that's sort of beside the point; when I'm making the song I'm engaged and uplifted in a way that feels different than any other aspect of my life.My overall point here is that Tweedy has helped me feel like it's okay to write rudimentary little nonsense songs, not to take it too seriously, and just enjoy the process. I'm glad I read this book. The book is small and portable but don't let that deceive you, it is an unbelievable book full of wisdom and tips from (in my opinion) one of the greatest songwriters of my generation. Jeff Tweedy is one of those writers where his words feel like he is talking directly to you in the room while you tinker away on your guitar or piano. His advice is practical, concise, and simple. The best part of this book is his advice on putting your ego in the backseat for a second. Judging my own writing was always the biggest issue that held me back from ever finishing songs, but he shares his own experiences with his ego and lets us know that we're not alone and that there are ways to overcome that.An incredible read from an incredible musician, this is definitely one of those books you'll want to reference again and again.
