This is not an easy read. It is painful to hear Carrot recount so many painful episodes of her childhood. But she does it in a way that doesn't sound whiny or "feel sorry for me."I have read just about everything that Carrot has put out there for us to read. Her first book of her journey on the Pacific Coast Trail is the best of more than ten books I have read by similar authors. She writes like a surgeon using the scalpel to story tell. Her prose is hard hitting and very real.Carrot has bared her soul to us in the book. Hopefully, the experience was cathartic for her. She is a role model for the so many people out there whose lives and histories fall "outside the box."Kudos ! I really like Quinn’s writing style. She is very introspective and expressive. I’ve been following her social media accounts for years. My wife and I actually bumped into her and the crowd she was hiking with on her 2nd PCT thru hike. To be honest, she was quite grouchy and pretty unfriendly. Not like the rest of the group who were very friendly and reflected that typical happy go lucky demeanor we had grown accustomed to encountering on the trail. Looking back I realized she was having a very hard day and I think in my excitement of meeting her I probably came off a little to familiar as I felt like I knew her when in reality I was just one of hundreds, maybe thousands, of people who were following her journey but were complete strangers.This book, maybe even more so than her first book, reveals more of who she is and the terrible hardships and obstacles she faced growing up. I too had a mentally ill parent as a child and related to a lot of what she felt though fortunately my experience paled in comparison to the hardships she lived through.I highly recommend this book and even if your not a long distance hiker enthusiast, check out her first book. Together they tell a very compelling story from a very gifted story teller.
